Having a dog can enrich your life tremendously, but it can also come with its share of difficulty. Many owners simply do not know how to effectively handle canine behavioral problems, and can sometimes make the dog’s behavior worse. If this is your situation, then relax – we’re here to help!
It is easier to train a dog if you reward him. When training your dog, reinforce good behavior with praise. As he is learning a new command, reward him with positive reinforcements, such as games and walks. The golden rule to follow is that the good behavior produces the reward and not the reward produces the good behavior. Potty training a puppy can be a harsh task at times, but not impossible. You have to remember that the puppy doesn’t know that when they go to the bathroom inside that it is wrong. Try your best to keep an eye on your puppy and if it starts looking like it has to go to the bathroom let it outside, after the puppy goes to the bathroom praise the puppy so it knows it did the right thing.
If you have problems with your dog digging up your yard and garden, create a space just for fido. Essentially make a sandbox filled with dirt. To get your dog to understand that it is his area, bury some toys and dog treats in the dirt for him to dig up. If you occasionally bury new toys and treats, he will stay interested in his area and stay out of your garden.
With aggressive dogs it is best to begin slowly. Aggressive dogs see themselves as the dominant role in the pack and trying to take that role from them too quickly can result in a negative response from the animal. To avoid bites or difficulty, take small steps in establishing yourself as the pack leader.
It takes the entire family to train a dog. When you have a family dog it is important that all members participate in the training. This ensures that the message of what is right and wrong is consistent. Involving children in the training ensures that the family pet sees them as alpha members of the family.
One of the easiest ways for you to begin to train your dog(s) is to research the types of training classes available in your area. Consider checking out the classes and the venues before committing to one so that you can make sure both you and your pet feel comfortable before beginning the training process.
For effective dog training, any correction or praise should happen when you catch the dog in the act of the behavior you are trying to reinforce or eliminate. By doing this, your dog will connect his behavior to your reaction. If you reprimand a dog after an unwanted action, he will be confused.
Every owner owes it to their dog to know the basics of dog training. And the good news is that, even if you know little about canine behavior, there are simple and very easy steps you can take to develop a more positive and healthy relationship with your dog.
